Tapioca Starch Such A Good Substitute For Wheat Flour

Tapioca starch is a starch extracted from cassava root. The cassava root is relatively easy to grow and a dietary staple in several countries in Africa, Asia and South America.

Production varies by location, but always involves squeezing starchy liquid out of ground cassava root. Once the starchy liquid is out, the water is allowed to evaporate. When all the water has evaporated, a fine tapioca starch is left behind.

Let’s find out with us: Why tapioca starch is such a good substitute for wheat flour?

Gluten-free

While conventional flours contribute to problems such as leaky gut and inflammation, cassava is a completely gluten-free option. This can make it a better choice for families and those with sensitive systems. It can also be important for

people with autoimmune triggers to cut back on common allergens and food irritants.

When Lyna, my roomate started getting an itchy red rash on his arms, I knew something was up. So I scheduled an appointment with a functional medicine doctor right away. After taking her to the appointment, the naturopath advised that she try staying away from gluten and other known allergens and do a small version of an elimination diet just for a short period of time to see if we could identify what’s causing it.

Since I have a food allergy myself, I know a lot about elimination diets. My first thought, however, was one of stress. Lyna  knows what she likes and elimination diets are not always kid-friendly! If Lyna had it her way, he would eat quesadillas and beans all day every day! So I knew I was going to need to figure something out. After doing some research, I came across a lifesaver: Tapioca Starch!

At first, when I started reading about tapioca starch, I almost couldn’t believe it! A gluten-free, grain-free nut-free starch? Count me in! I then use tapioca starch. And it is great, both Lyna and I love it!

Low in sugar

If someone has diabetes or is trying to watch his or her blood sugar, it is very important for him or her to be aware of which foods have a low glycemic index. Many people may not realize that traditional flours and bread can spike their blood sugar even if they aren’t consuming a lot of sugar. Studies have shown that tapioca starch is a low-sugar alternative that can help blood sugar levels stay stable.

Easy to digest

For those who struggle with irritable bowels or a sensitive stomach, cassava presents a perfect alternati ve for troubled bellies. It is gentle and easy to digest, presenting a non-irritating alternative to heavier flours. In addition, cassava’s lack of chemicals may help protect gut flora and reduce bacterial imbalances by providing a healthy prebiotic.

Allergen and grain-free

For those with chronic fatigue or sensitive health, a grain-free diet can be a lifesaver. Food sensitivities and autoimmune diseases can trigger a loss of energy and irritate the body. A food allergy can even occur without causing a lot of obvious symptoms, making it hard to associate the problem with the cause. Tapioca starch eliminates this problem by being free of common allergens.
